What Happens Inside a Newborn Studio Session
Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of the most emotional experiences you will ever have. Those early days are filled with sleepy snuggles, tiny stretches and moments you never want to forget. A newborn studio session is the perfect way to capture this time in a calm and gentle environment.
If you have never had a newborn session before, you may be wondering how it all works. This guide will walk you through exactly what happens inside a newborn studio session, so you can feel relaxed, prepared and excited for your visit.
A Warm, Welcoming Space
When you arrive at the studio, the first thing you will notice is how warm and comfortable the space feels. Newborns love being cosy, so the room is gently heated to help your baby relax and settle easily.
There is no rush or pressure. You can take your time getting settled, feeding your baby or simply having a quiet moment together before we begin.
A Baby-Led Approach
Every session is guided entirely by your baby.
This means:
- We pause for feeds
- We stop for cuddles
- We give time for nappy changes
- We follow your baby’s natural rhythm
There is absolutely no expectation for your baby to behave in a certain way. Awake, asleep, fussy or calm, we work gently with however they are feeling.
Simple, Safe and Natural Posing
Safety is the number one priority in every newborn session.
I use soft, comfortable positions that support your baby naturally. The aim is to capture those tiny details you will want to remember forever, such as:
- Their curled-up hands
- Tiny toes
- Sleepy expressions
- Soft little features
I avoid anything that feels overly posed or unnatural. Babies are perfect exactly as they are.
Using Beautiful Wraps and Textures
The studio is filled with neutral wraps, blankets and simple newborn pieces that create a timeless look. Soft creams, beiges and earthy tones work beautifully for gentle, classic images.
If you have a sentimental blanket, a knitted item from a grandparent or a special outfit, you are very welcome to bring it along. Personal touches make your photos even more meaningful.
Parent and Sibling Photos
Some of the most emotional images come from the moments you spend holding your baby.
Parents are always encouraged to be part of the session.
We capture:
- Mum and baby
- Dad and baby
- All three together
- Siblings meeting their new brother or sister
Older siblings are welcome to join in at the beginning or the end of the session, depending on what works best for your family.
Creating a Calm, Gentle Atmosphere
Newborn sessions are quiet, unhurried and soothing.
There is no loud equipment, no bright lights and no stressful posing.
The focus is on:
- Connection
- Soft moments
- Natural interactions
- Your baby’s tiny details
You will spend most of the session relaxing, watching your baby or enjoying cuddles while I work around you.
How Long Does a Newborn Session Take?
Most newborn studio sessions last between one to two hours, depending on:
- Feeding
- Settling
- Nappy changes
- How awake or sleepy your baby is
There is no set timetable. We move entirely at your baby’s pace.
What to Wear
Neutral, soft tones work beautifully for family photos in the studio. Think creams, beige, grey, sage or dusty blue.
Avoid bold patterns or dark colours that can distract from your baby.
Comfort is important. You should feel relaxed enough to sit, cuddle and move naturally.
After the Session
Once your session is complete, you can take your time gathering your things and getting ready to head home.
I will carefully select and edit your images, choosing the most beautiful moments from your session. You will receive your final gallery full of warm, heartfelt photographs that capture this fleeting stage of life.
