A Complete Guide to Newborn Photos in the First 14 Days

November 16, 2025 Studio Photography

Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of the most emotional and unforgettable experiences you will ever have. Those early days are filled with soft snuggles, tiny stretches, milk-drunk smiles and moments that pass far too quickly.

As a newborn photographer, one of the questions I hear most often is:

“Why are newborn photos best taken in the first 14 days?”

This guide explains exactly why this early window is ideal, what you can expect from your session, and how to prepare for beautiful, relaxed and natural newborn photographs.

Why the First 14 Days Are the Best Time for Newborn Photos

The first two weeks of life are a very special stage. During this time, babies are:

Sleepier

Curled naturally into cosy newborn positions

Easier to settle

Comfortable being gently posed

More predictable with feeds and naps

These tiny details help create those classic, peaceful newborn images that parents love.

After the two-week mark, babies tend to become more alert, stretch out more and develop stronger reflexes, which changes the style of the session. You can still absolutely book newborn photos after that time, but the first 14 days offer a beautifully calm and dreamy window.

What to Expect During a Newborn Photography Session

Your newborn session is designed to be calm, relaxed and completely baby-led. There is never any rush and everything is done with your baby’s comfort as the priority.

Here is what typically happens:

A Warm Welcome

When you arrive, we take a few minutes to settle in, feed if needed and make sure your baby is comfortable.

A Gentle, Baby-Led Approach

Every baby is unique. I follow your baby’s natural rhythm, pausing for feeds, cuddles or changes whenever needed.

Soft Posing and Natural Movement

I use comfortable, safe positions that support your baby naturally. The aim is to capture how tiny and peaceful they are in these early days.

Parent and Sibling Photos

These moments are often some of the most meaningful. Holding your baby, looking at them, relaxing together as a family.

A Calm Environment

The studio is warm, soothing and set up to make your session comfortable and enjoyable.

Preparing for Your Newborn Session

You do not need to do much at all. Your baby is perfect exactly as they are.

Here are a few simple tips to help the session run smoothly:

Feed Before You Arrive

A full tummy makes for a calm and sleepy baby.

Dress Your Baby in Something Easy to Remove

Simple poppers or a zip make transitions easier.

Bring Spare Nappies and a Blanket

Babies often love being wrapped in something that smells like home.

Keep Your Morning Calm

Try to avoid overstimulation or long car journeys just before the session.

For Parents

Neutral, soft-toned clothing photographs beautifully and keeps the focus on your connection with your baby.

What Babies Wear for the Photos

Most newborn photographers provide wraps, blankets and tiny outfits in neutral tones. You are also welcome to bring sentimental items such as:

A knitted blanket

A favourite muslin

A special hat or outfit

A family keepsake

These small touches make your baby’s photos even more personal.

Can We Include Siblings and Pets?

Absolutely.

Older siblings are encouraged to be part of the session, and pets can be included safely too, either in-studio or during lifestyle sessions at home.

Some of the sweetest moments come from siblings proudly holding their new brother or sister.

How Long Does a Newborn Session Take?

Newborn sessions usually take up to 2 hours, depending on feeding, settling and changes. There is no pressure at all. We go at your baby’s pace and take breaks whenever needed.

What If My Baby Does Not Sleep?

Do not worry at all.

Awake newborn photos are absolutely beautiful. Bright eyes, gentle stretches and curious little expressions make for wonderful images.

A good newborn session is not about making your baby do anything. It is about capturing them exactly as they are.

Do We Really Have to Book Early?

Yes, it is always best to book while you are still pregnant, ideally just after your 20-week scan. I reserve space around your due date and then confirm the exact session day once your baby arrives.

Last-minute sessions are sometimes possible, but availability is much tighter.
