Family Photography in Oxfordshire: Why Mum Belongs in the Photos Too
If you look through the photos on your phone, I’d guess there are hundreds — probably thousands — of your children.
But how many are there of you with them?
As a family photographer in Witney, Oxfordshire, I see this all the time. Mum is usually the one taking the photos, organising the days out, remembering the birthdays and documenting all the little everyday moments.
Which means she’s very often missing from the photographs herself.
Family photos aren’t really for right now
When I photograph a family, I’m not particularly interested in creating a gallery where everyone is perfectly posed and smiling at the camera.
Of course, we’ll get that lovely photograph of everyone together. But I also want the ones that actually feel like your family.
The way your daughter climbs all over you. Your son trying to make everyone laugh. The cuddles. The personalities. The bits that don’t go quite to plan.
Because children change ridiculously quickly.
And although you might book a family photoshoot because you’d like some beautiful photographs for your walls, I think their real value comes much later.
One day, these photographs belong to your children too.
“But I hate having my photo taken”
I hear this all the time.
You might want to lose a little weight first. You don’t like your arms. You feel awkward in front of a camera. You’re happier just having beautiful photographs of the children.
I understand.
But when your children look at these photographs years from now, they’re not going to inspect the things you were self-conscious about.
They’re going to look at the way you held them.
The way you laughed together.
The way they looked when they were tucked into you.
They’ll be looking for you. Be there.
Relaxed family photography in Witney, Oxfordshire
My family photoshoots are relaxed, natural and very much centred around your family being yourselves.
There’s no expectation for young children to sit perfectly still or perform for the camera. In fact, some of my favourite photographs happen when everyone stops worrying about the camera altogether.
We play. We cuddle. We move around. We let the children be children.
The result is a gallery that feels like your family, rather than a collection of photographs that could belong to anyone.
Studio family photoshoots in Oxfordshire
My photography studio is based in Witney, Oxfordshire, making it easily accessible for families coming from Witney, Oxford, Burford and across the Cotswolds and wider Oxfordshire area.
Studio family photography doesn't have to mean stiff poses against a backdrop. My approach is simple, relaxed and natural, with plenty of space for children to move around and personalities to come through.
And yes — even if you originally planned to book “just for the children”, I will always encourage you to step into a few.
You don't need to love being photographed.
You just need to exist in the photographs.
Don’t wait for the perfect time
There probably won't be a point when everyone has the perfect haircut, nobody has a bruise on their knee, you love every inch of yourself and all the children are guaranteed to behave beautifully.
And that's okay.
This is what your family looks like now.
A family photoshoot freezes a tiny bit of a stage that otherwise quietly disappears while you're busy living it.
So take the photos of your children.
Take far too many of them on your phone.
But every now and then, book the family photoshoot and hand the camera to somebody else.
Because you were there too.
