How to Prepare Your Home for a Lifestyle Family Session

November 15, 2025

Lifestyle family photography is all about capturing natural moments in the place that means the most to you: your home. There is something incredibly special about photographing a family in their own space. The cuddles on the sofa, the morning routines, the favourite corners, the toys scattered around, and the unique character of your home all tell your story.

The good news is that preparing your home does not need to be stressful. Your space does not have to look like a show home. A little light preparation is all you need to help create beautiful, relaxed photographs.

Here is a simple guide to help you get ready.

You Do Not Need a Perfect Home

Before we begin, let me reassure you:

Your home does not need to be spotless or styled.

Lifestyle photography celebrates real life, warmth and connection. I will guide you through everything and choose areas with the best light and simplest backgrounds. Tiny details like laundry baskets, toys or clutter can easily be moved out of the frame. You do not need a Pinterest-perfect house; you just need your family, your home and a relaxed mindset.

Choose a Few Key Areas

You do not need to prepare the entire house. I usually photograph in:

  • The living room
  • The master bedroom
  • The nursery
  • A hallway with lovely light
  • The kitchen
  • A garden or patio, weather permitting

Choose two or three rooms that feel meaningful or simply have good natural light. That is more than enough for a full session.

Light Is the Most Important Part

Natural window light is what makes lifestyle sessions beautiful. Before your session:

  • Open blinds and curtains fully
  • Turn off artificial lights
  • Clear the areas near windows if possible
  • Move small furniture items if they block the light

Soft daylight will always create the most flattering photos.

Tidy Lightly (Not Perfectly)

A full clean is not needed.

Focus on quick, simple tidying:

  • Clear bedside tables
  • Remove clutter from sofas and floors
  • Straighten bedding
  • Tidy kitchen counters
  • Put away brightly coloured toys in the shooting area

Remember: everything else can stay exactly as it is. A home with personality photographs beautifully.

Make the Bed

This is one of the most important steps.

A neatly made bed is perfect for:

  • Cuddly family moments
  • Newborn photos
  • Children playing or jumping
  • Relaxed seated portraits

Choose simple bedding in neutral tones if possible, but do not worry if yours is colourful; I can work with whatever you have.

Consider What to Wear

Neutral or soft colours always work best indoors:

  • Cream, beige, white and grey
  • Soft blues and greens
  • Muted florals
  • Linen, cotton and knit textures

Avoid heavy logos and very bright colours which can reflect onto skin or compete with the surroundings.

Comfort is key. If you feel relaxed, you will look relaxed.

Think About Meaningful Details

Lifestyle sessions are about capturing your life as it is right now. This might include:

  • Your child’s favourite book
  • A special blanket
  • A rocking chair
  • A pet curled up in the corner
  • A sentimental toy or soft animal

These small touches make your gallery more personal.

Pets Are Welcome

Pets are very much part of the family.

If you have a dog or cat, feel free to include them. They often bring moments of fun, unpredictability and love to the photos.

Keep Your Home Warm

This is especially important if you have a newborn. Warm rooms help babies settle and stay happy during the session. A comfortable temperature also encourages relaxed, natural cuddles.

Relax and Enjoy It

Children will be children. Homes will feel lived-in. Moments will be real.

The best lifestyle photographs come from:

  • Play
  • Connection
  • Laughter
  • Snuggles
  • Imperfect real life

Your home does not need to look pristine. It just needs to look like yours.
