A Newborn, a Dog, and a Whole Lot of Love! Why At-Home Sessions Are So Special
There’s something truly magical about being invited into someone’s home to capture those early days with their new baby. At-home newborn sessions have a special kind of calm, no rushing, no travel, no pressure.
Just you, your baby, your familiar surroundings… and sometimes, your very excited family dog!
Recently, I had the absolute joy of photographing a beautiful family who had just welcomed their little one into the world. Their home was full of warmth — soft lighting, sleepy cuddles, quiet giggles, and one very proud furry sibling keeping a close eye on everything.
It’s no secret that dogs are often our first babies. So when a newborn arrives, there’s this incredible, unspoken bond that begins to form; curiosity, protectiveness, and the sweetest little moments that deserve to be remembered. Whether it’s a gentle sniff of tiny toes, a cozy spot curled up next to mum and baby, or a quick photobomb during a nappy change, these moments are gold.
One of my favourite things about at-home sessions is how natural everything feels. Just a relaxed pace that lets your family be themselves. I gently guide things when needed, but mostly, I observe. I look for those in-between moments, the way dad strokes baby’s hair without realising, the soft nose nudge from the dog as if to say “I’m here too,” or the way mum's eyes soften every time she looks at her newborn.
These are the kinds of photos that tell a story.
Not just of a baby being born, but of a family growing; in love, in connection, and sometimes, in paws 🐾
